Poem for Sunday, Sheep and Wool, Only Lovers Left Alive

By Donna Masini

It's like ants
and more ants.

West, east
their little axes

hack and tease.
Your sins. Your back taxes.

This is your Etna,
your senate

of dread, at the axis
of reason, your taxi

to hell. You see
your past tense--

and next? A nest
of jittery ties.

You're ill at ease,
at sea,

almost in-
sane. You've eaten

your saints.
You pray to your sins.

Even sex
is no exit.

Ah, you exist.

Adam had a track meet at Sherwood High School across the county, so after a morning doing assorted chores, we had an early lunch and dropped him and a friend off at the meet, then drove to the Howard County Fairgrounds for the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival. Then we stopped at the azalea garden at the Brighton Dam on the way to pick him up. It was a gorgeous day (we had rain late in the afternoon but by then we were driving home) and we saw lots of lovely things:

Sheep and Lambs

Angora Bunnies

Angora Goats

Geese and Goslings

Howard County Horses

Azaleas Along the Patuxent River

Me Among Brighton Dam Azaleas

We listened to the Kentucky Derby broadcast on the radio driving back, then we had Hot Brown for dinner (we were going to have mint juleps too, but settled for mint Dove squares). Adam was pretty fried -- he has to work at Hebrew school on Sunday morning and needs to spend the rest of the day studying for the AP exams that he has next week -- but Paul and I went to see Hiddleston and Swinton in Only Lovers Left Alive, which is moody and creepy and brilliantly acted!
