Poem for Saturday, Alliances, Longwood Mums

The Winds Of Fate
By Ella Wheeler Wilcox

One ship drives east and another drives west
With the selfsame winds that blow.
Tis the set of the sails
And not the gales
Which tells us the way to go.
Like the winds of the seas are the ways of fate,
As we voyage along through the life:
Tis the set of a soul
That decides its goal,
And not the calm or the strife.

Friday broke temperature records in the DC area -- it was 80 degrees and rather humid, so that we had the wonderful smell of damp leaves on a day that felt more like May than November. I spent the morning working on a review of Voyager's still-problematic-after-all-these-years "Alliances" and watching chipmunks scamper across the deck.

We walked in the woods, went to the food store, and had dinner with my parents, then we came home and watched this year's Fantastic Four, which is as plodding, humorless, and predictable as you've heard -- the Gruffudd-Alba-Evans one is much more fun. Here are some of the indoor and outdoor autumn chrysanthemums at Longwood Gardens:
