Poem for Thursday and November Great Falls

To America
By James Weldon Johnson

How would you have us, as we are?
Or sinking ‘neath the load we bear?
Our eyes fixed forward on a star?
Or gazing empty at despair?

Rising or falling? Men or things?
With dragging pace or footsteps fleet?
Strong, willing sinews in your wings?
Or tightening chains about your feet?

--------

Wednesday was warmer than Tuesday and overcast, making it the perfect day to go take a walk at Great Falls. I had plans with my very oldest friend from elementary school, Linda, so we met for lunch at Vie de France in Potomac Village, ate at the ourdoor tables, then went to Great Falls and took a walk along the canal, where the leaves were past peak but we saw a couple of ducks, a snake, and a quick-diving turtle while we caught up on our families and stuff:

When I got home I hung out with Maddy for a while and discussed her long-term school plans, then took her to work. While she was there, Paul and I ate leftover jambalaya and watched Blindspot, which was mostly quite satisfying -- there are a lot of women on that show who are great characters, even the awful human beings -- and, after retrieving Maddy and watching my Voyager episode for the week, Designated Survivor (where Maggie Q needs to kick some ass).
