The Heart Is a Foreign CountryCollapse )

Saturday was a gorgeous, sunny day, and since we have snow forecast yet again for Sunday, we wanted to get out and see signs of spring. So we went to Green Spring Gardens in Alexandria, where the greenhouse has orchids, cacti, birds of paradise, and other flowers, while the outdoor gardens have snowdrops, crocuses, lenten roses, winter jasmine, camellias, even a few azaleas. There were no turtles yet in the ponds, but there were a pair of very friendly, hopeful geese who followed us looking for handouts and a heron that took off when other visitors got too close.

After dinner, we watched Mary Queen of Scots, which has good performances but some really weird, in some cases ahistorical script decisions that disempower Mary and Elizabeth both; made me miss Katharine Hepburn and Florence Eldridge in Mary of Scotland from over 80 years ago! Then we watched The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, which is just strange, like Disney tried to mash up The Wizard of Oz with the Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland movies and couldn't figure out what to do with a great cast of actors in cameos, though I liked Mackenzie Foy.
